Richard Doney, Festival Director, said “The performance by B Sharp was stunning. We gave them free rein to devise a piece which fitted the themes of the Festival and they produced something which grabbed the audience with its images and sound.”
“The Big Bang was a project that grew quite organically out of an idea to combine music and the theme of the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival 2009 – Evolution. We seamlessly put together all the skills and rhythmic ideas that we had worked on in a series of workshops prior to the festival. Thus, our performance was a non-stop journey from the primordial and random sounds of the earth before sentient life (some of us were still exhibiting signs of recently having achieved sentience!), through ‘found sounds’, to vocal grooves, to body percussion, to tuned percussion, to hand drums, to samba drums, to electric funk, and finishing with break-beat drum and bass. The theme music from 2001 Space Odyssey was carried throughout the performance, appearing in different guises. This was all set to very nice projections made by Andy Hawthorne, of all sorts of related crazy stuff on a big screen behind us. All in all the performance was one of the most fun things I’ve been involved in putting together, the group of young people, and trainees, were a real pleasure to work with – very polite, attentive, and ready to try new things. Looking forward to more things like this happening with B Sharp” – Ralph Cree.
